Join 3 million others and become a Dementia Friend
Oct 15
Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends initiative was launched in 2013 to tackle the stigma that often results in people with dementia losing friends and being socially isolated. Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.
Dementia Friends help by raising awareness and understanding, so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want. Anyone can become a dementia friend. You can access information online or attend a short information session run locally by a Dementia Champion. https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/
Dementia Friends Champions are trained volunteers who encourage others to learn a little bit about dementia. Champions run ‘Information Sessions’ in their community and inspire others to help those living with dementia live well.
Our partners at Engage Leeds have a dedicated team of 6 trained Dementia Champions, who actively support people living with Dementia. In addition to providing housing related support to people living with Dementia (city wide), they also raise awareness by delivering Dementia Friends sessions. These sessions are free to attend and last between 45-60 mins. Each person who attends a session will become a Dementia Friend and subsequently be added to the Alzheimer’s Society’s national database (anonymously if preferred).
Currently a staggering 3 million people are registered as a Dementia Friend.
The Engage Leeds Dementia Team can deliver up to 6 ‘community’ based sessions per year for a maximum of 12 participants per session.
