Working in Partnership Showcase: Uniting Industry and Research

About

The Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York invite you to the Working in Partnership Showcase on Wednesday 8th May 2019.

The Showcase will examine the components of successful research collaborations for both industry and academia. Case studies will be shared from Leeds, Sheffield and York that demonstrate how strong relationships have been developed, in areas related to the Industrial Strategy.

Then you will hear from a high-level multi-stakeholder panel on how organisational innovation can create business growth and improved profitability. Senior representatives from industry, academia and government will debate how innovation in leadership and management practices, skills development and employee well-being can help drive better business.

What will you gain from attending?

With the government’s announcement of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, there are bountiful opportunities for industry and academia to join forces and collectively tackle the big societal and industrial challenges of today.

The long-term plan of the Strategy is to raise productivity and earning power in the UK. The fund is a core pillar in the government’s commitment to increase funding in research and development by £4.7 billion over 4 years to strengthen UK science and business.

Collaboration is key to accessing this funding; therefore the need to build partnerships early on in the conception of a project is vital but also bringing relevant experts into an established project could open new doors for progression and funding opportunities.

The Working in Partnership Showcase aims to foster a culture of collaboration between social science researchers and industry with opportunities for discussion, networking and celebration of achievements. This is a unique opportunity that will provide a platform for a diverse range of representatives from across numerous sectors to conduce a rich conversation on the challenges facing UK businesses today.

Event background

This event will mark the end of a period of funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) that each institution was awarded back in early 2018, linked to their ESRC Impact Acceleration Accounts (IAA) and research collaboration through the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP). The funding has provided a platform for these three Universities to develop new and strengthen existing relationships between the private sector and social science research.

We will also welcome a number of our PhD students from the WRDTP, who engaged with industry representatives at the Working in Partnership training residential in January.

How is the event funded?

The event is funded as part of the ESRC IAA DTP Business Boost Fund which aims to align social science research with Industrial Strategy priorities, supporting a step change in our working with business partners, facilitating productive collaborations across the WRDTP network.
